Rug Size & Measurement Guide

Find the Right Rug Size for Your Space

Choosing the right rug size can completely change the look and feel of a room. At Carpitzi, we offer handmade rugs in a variety of standard and custom sizes designed for living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, hallways, entryways, offices, and other spaces.

Because our rugs are handmade, measurements may have slight natural variations. This guide will help you understand rug dimensions, choose the right size for your room, and measure your space before placing an order.

Understanding Rug Measurements

Rug sizes are generally listed as: Length × Width

For example: 8 × 10 ft means approximately 8 feet wide by 10 feet long. Depending on the orientation of the design, the same rug may be placed either vertically or horizontally in your room.

Common measurement units

  • Feet (ft)
  • Inches (in)
  • Centimeters (cm)
  • Meters (m)

Popular Rug Sizes

Different rooms require different rug proportions. Below are some commonly used area rug sizes and where they may work well.

5 × 7 ft Rug

A 5 × 7 ft area rug can work well in smaller living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, seating areas, and apartments. It is a practical choice when you want to define a space without covering most of the floor.

5 × 8 ft Rug

A 5 × 8 ft rug provides slightly more coverage and works well beneath a coffee table, in bedrooms, or in medium-sized seating areas.

6 × 9 ft Rug

A 6 × 9 ft area rug is a versatile size for living rooms and bedrooms. It can provide enough coverage to visually connect furniture while still leaving some surrounding flooring visible.

8 × 10 ft Rug

An 8 × 10 ft area rug is one of the most popular choices for larger living rooms and bedrooms. It provides enough space to create a defined seating area and can accommodate larger furniture arrangements.

9 × 12 ft Rug

A 9 × 12 ft rug is suitable for larger rooms, spacious living areas, dining rooms, bedrooms, and open-plan interiors. It provides substantial floor coverage and can help visually anchor larger furniture arrangements.

10 × 14 ft Rug

A 10 × 14 ft area rug is designed for particularly large spaces. It can work well in spacious living rooms, large dining areas, open-plan interiors, and other rooms requiring extensive floor coverage.

How to Choose the Right Rug Size

Before ordering, consider the following:

  1. Measure Your Room
Measure the length and width of the area where you want to place the rug. Use a measuring tape and record the measurements in feet or inches.
  2. Mark the Rug Area
Use painter's tape to outline the approximate rug dimensions on your floor. This is one of the easiest ways to visualize how the selected size will look in your room.
  3. Consider Your Furniture
Think about how the rug will interact with your furniture. For a living room, you may want:
    • All furniture legs on the rug
    • Front legs of furniture on the rug
    • A smaller rug positioned beneath the coffee table
The best arrangement depends on your room size and preferred interior style.
  4. Consider the Room's Shape
A rectangular rug generally works well in rectangular rooms, while round, irregular, or specially shaped rugs can be used to create a more distinctive visual effect.
  5. Leave Some Floor Visible
You do not necessarily need to cover the entire floor. Leaving a consistent border of visible flooring around the rug can help define the space and create a balanced appearance.

Rug Size Guide by Room

Living Room

For living rooms, the rug should help visually connect the seating arrangement. Common choices include:

5 × 7 ft | 6 × 9 ft | 8 × 10 ft | 9 × 12 ft

For larger living rooms, a larger rug can help bring sofas, chairs, and a coffee table together as one cohesive seating area.

Bedroom

A rug can add warmth and softness around the bed. Common choices include:

5 × 7 ft | 6 × 9 ft | 8 × 10 ft | 9 × 12 ft

For larger bedrooms, an 8 × 10 ft or 9 × 12 ft rug can provide generous coverage around the bed. The ideal size depends on the bed dimensions and the amount of floor space available around it.

Dining Room

For dining areas, the rug should generally provide enough space for the dining chairs to remain on the rug even when they are pulled away from the table.

Before choosing a dining room rug, measure:

Table length + additional space around the table

This helps ensure that chairs do not repeatedly move on and off the edge of the rug.

Hallways & Entryways

Long, narrow spaces can benefit from runner rugs. When choosing a runner, consider:

  • Hallway length
  • Hallway width
  • Door clearance
  • Furniture placement
  • Walking space

Leave enough room around the runner so that it does not feel cramped against the walls.

Handmade Rug Size Variation

Every Carpitzi rug is handmade. Unlike machine-made products manufactured to an identical mechanical specification, handmade rugs can have natural variations in size and shape.

As a general guideline, slight variations may occur during handmade production. Typically, size variation can be around 2–3 inches, while in some cases variations of approximately 5–7 inches may occur depending on the rug, construction, size, and production process.

These variations are a natural characteristic of handmade craftsmanship.

If you require a particularly precise measurement for your room, please contact us before placing your order.

Custom Rug Sizes

Need a size that is not listed? We may be able to create custom-size handmade rugs depending on the design and production requirements.

Custom sizing can be useful for:

  • Large living rooms
  • Oversized bedrooms
  • Dining areas
  • Hallways
  • Open-plan spaces
  • Commercial interiors
  • Unusually shaped rooms
  • Interior design projects

Please contact our team with your required dimensions before ordering a custom-size piece.

How to Measure for a Custom Rug

For the most accurate measurement:

  1. Measure the length of the area.
  2. Measure the width of the area.
  3. Decide how much floor you want the rug to cover.
  4. Consider furniture placement.
  5. Mark the proposed dimensions with painter's tape.
  6. Check doors, cabinets, and other areas where the rug may interfere with movement.
  7. Confirm the final measurements before placing your order.

For custom orders, please provide measurements in feet, inches, or centimeters.

Rug Size & Furniture Placement

The right rug size is not only about the dimensions of the room. Furniture placement is equally important.

A rug can be used to:

  • Define a seating area
  • Connect furniture visually
  • Create a focal point
  • Add warmth and texture
  • Separate zones in an open-plan room
  • Add softness beneath furniture

For a cohesive interior, consider the rug and furniture as one composition rather than selecting the rug size independently.
